Weird Science

There is some Weird Science that goes on in the livestock industry.  But back in the 80s, Weird Science was a hit movie with a hot chick in it.  Remember her, hunh…yep, Kelly LeBrock.  There were a bunch of other 80s movies that have become somewhat obscure, but I still stop the channel surfing when I see these flicks on the tube.  Some were huge hits.  Some, not so much.

There were huge hits like The Breakfast Club, The Blues Brothers, Pretty in Pink, Caddyshack and Ghostbusters.  What about St. Elmo’s Fire?

Bull Durham and Major League came out in the 80s.

Sure, we all remember Back to the Future but what about Michael J. Fox in TeenWolf and the Secret of My Success  (Ohhh, yeahh!!)

Spaceballs “May the schwartz be with you.”

Beverly Hills Cop

Willow

Honey, I shrunk the kids

Strange Brew–“Eh, Hoser.”

Youngblood–hockey movie that had Patrick Swayze, Rob Lowe and Keanu Reeves.  I remember parts of this movie vividly.

The Outsiders

Young Guns

Karate Kid–iconic–Who doesn’t remember Wax on-Wax off?

Conan the Barbarian & Terminator made the Arnold a household name.

First Blood–(very few remember the name of the movie but most remember the name of the main character in this series–Rambo)

No Way Out

The Abyss

Rocky IV

Spies Like Us–Chevy Chase and Dan Akroyd–pretty good flick where the heroes saved the world.

Police Academy–remember the dude that made all of the sounds.

See No Evil, Hear No Evil & Stir Crazy–Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder.  Of course, Gene Wilder’s best two parts were in Young Frankenstein and Blazing Saddles.

Back to School–Rodney Dangerfield,  “Oh?!  You’re an English lit. major.  Maybe you can help me straighten out my Longfellow.”

World According to Garp–way twisted Robin Williams movie that I like, a lot.

Caveman–Absolute retarded movie that always puts me in a good mood.  However, if you’re going to name your daughter Launa, shoudn’t her twin be named either Attuk or Tonda?

Yes, I know that there wasn’t much to learn from reading this blog.  I just hope that as you read through it, you remembered some parts of these movies and cracked a smile.  I even laughed out loud just typing several of these titles.  Nostalgia is not a bad thing.  I need to go watch Rocky IV.  That movie makes me want to work out.  Obviously, I haven’t watched it much lately.

Dirty Rumour Online Sale

Normally, I would say that a sale held on May 8 is a spring sale.  But our two days of spring are already over and we jumped right into the oven of summer.  100 degree days, 30-40 winds in the first week of May.  So, the Kelln’s & Seelkes are bringing you the Dirty Rumour summer sale.  Every kid in this sale is sired by either Joe Dirt or Rumour Has It.  There are 8 wethers and 8 doe kids.  All 8 wethers, when fed and shown properly will place at a major show like Tulsa or KSJLS or state fairs.  I would say that 5 of the wethers are premium sale quality and 3 of those are capable of doing some serious damage.  The 8 doe kids are impressive.  This is a very good set of doe kids that will be heard from in the show ring and will then further their careers in the breeding pen.  If you are interested in showing does, then you need to be studying this set of doe kids.  They are really, really good.    It is worth the drive to Cleo Springs to look at this set of females.

Feel free to call me (580-571-5029) and I will gladly give you my thoughts on both sets of goats and I how I think that they will feed.

April showers bring….not this year.

Monday, Monday

Yes, it has been a Monday….all day long.  It could have been worse.  So, I’m not going to complain.  I’ll tell you about my weekend.  Kela flew back to OK for a wedding.  Tammy and Duke attended the wedding, then they all came back home Saturday afternoon.  All I can say, is that life in California is treating my girl good.  I didn’t want her to leave, but I’m glad that she is going to chase a dream.  I have faith in a few things.  She is a combination of my faith in numerous things–GOD, her upbringing, work ethic and a desire to do good.  I don’t like her being out there, but I respect it.

As a result of Kela being home, most of Tammy and I’s family came to the house on Sunday for cake and ice cream.  I hadn’t seen Tyke’s twins in dang neart a month.  Look out world–the twins are walking.  Grand-dad drove the BIG RV (or as Kela calls it–the tour bus) out on Saturday night.  They set up camp west of the big barn, unhooked the Dodge pickup, then went to watch the Arnett Promenade.  Yes, the stint is all he needed and things are good.

Tammy has a niece that is a senior at Arnett.  Let me just say that this girl is putting together one HELLUVA resume.  Madeline Rose Atha, more commonly known as Mattie, is the kind of kid that makes parents & grand-parents proud.  She is already an all-stater in softball.  But then she was recently named an Academic All-Stater.  WAY Impressive!   And yes, she is headed to OK State next year.  She’s a starter on a state tournament basketball team.  She has been to the National TSA contest several times, but not this year, as she has qualifed for National TSA, but also in a shooting event and she hasn’t done that one before.  So she’s going to go shoot.  Plus, she has bottle calves, horses and obviously a strong work ethic.  And as I am typing this, the Dragon Lady just brought me a copy of the Ellis County Capitol newspaper.  Guess what?  Mattie Atha has a cover story of her accomplishments.  All I can say, is that this is one really great girl that obviously has a an extemely good mother to make up for the father’s deficiencies.  Much like my own situation.  Yes, Todd, I’ll bring you a cold one at graduation.  Congrats to raising an impressive young person!  And there is a younger sister that is ready to make her mark.  Grandparents have got several years of watching grandkids excell in Ellis County.  Sarah will do well.  Duke will too.  Although, I just don’t think that we will have an academic all-state plaque in our house.  He’s smart enough, but that kind of thing just doesn’t interest him.

Speaking of Arnett and their Sr. Class.  They have 16 seniors this year.  4 of which made a 30 or higher on their ACT.  2 more have a 28.  They have won a state baseball title, a boys state basketball title, the girls have been to the state tourney in softball and basketball.  Dang?!  That’s good.  Congrats to that school and more importantly, to the parents of that set of kids.  Something worked right that year from Podunk to Harmon and south to Packsaddle that year or two.

Duke and the bottle baby rabbits are doing pretty good.  Foot had a hard time and didn’t make it.  Foot-Foot and Foot-Foot-Foot are thriving.  So, much like the joke, we have one Foot in the grave.

Congrats to Mattie and all the other stellar kids that are graduating this year.

Quotes

I like quotes.  They capture a snapshot of a person.  One bad quote can absolutely ruin a person.  Just ask that LA clippers moron.  The racist part is obvious. Why are we not more upset that this 80 year old dipshit gave his MISTRESS, yes, the chick that is NOT his wife, permission to sleep with any “black people”  as long as she isn’t seen or photographed with them?  Our society is so, and you can quote me, “effed up and out of balance, that we are more pissed about him telling his MISTRESS to not be seen or photographed with THOSE people.  It’s fine to sleep with them. Just don’t be seen with them.”  RUSM?!  The dumb ass didn’t use racial slurs.  He just comes across as a POS.  Quote me if you need to:  the whole thing is just wrong.  It’s effed up.  He had this conversation with his MISTRESS!  He’s 80 and she’s younger than me.  I’ve got a headache.  This guy is a dumb-ass…no doubt.  This mistress shouldn’t get any air play or type print.  The wife shouldn’t either as she knew that it was going on.  I have no use for this bunch of people.  I don’t care how much money is involved.  It’s dirty, wrong and there are better ways of doing things.  The news is at fault for giving these low rent, oxygen wasting pile of people air time.  And I quote–myself–“These people aren’t worth two squirts of duck shit and should not be in the news.  They should be flushed.  They are all dirty.”

A great quote can elevate a person.  Songs, tv shows, interviews, movies, whatever.  There is always a quote to be had.  I won’t call it the best movie ever, but I won’t argue with anybody that says that “The Shawshank Redemption” is #1.  The king of horror, Stephen King is the writer.  Which makes sense, because the plot is twisted and really well written.  But this is a killer good movie.  And it is easily quotable.  “Get busy living or get busy dying.”  “I hope.”  The ending sequence of this movie caused me to write a way good FFA speech years ago.  I will still rank that speech up there with the best of them.

If you are racist, then you won’t want to watch this movie, as Morgan Freeman probably should have won awards for his role in this movie.  He has had numerous stellar roles, but this is his home run.  I loved Tim Robbins in Bull Durham, but he was off the hook in Shawshank.

“Magnanimous”—that was the first time that I ever heard that word.  Ever. And it worked.  You tell me when you pulled that word out of your vocabulary lessons and used it in proper terminology.  NEVER!

If you missed the Shawshank movie tonight, it will be fine.  It is the 20 year anniversary, so IFC will play it a bunch this month.  Without a doubt, I love the ending of this move.  “I hope.”  My everyday being hinges on this quote and it did before I ever saw the movie.  I end my day, thinking about what I need to do, can do and want to do.  And I always HOPE that I can.  And a lot of these things are out of my control, but I HOPE and PRAY that it will work out.  And if it doesn’t, I will wish that it would have.

Pray for rain.  Horseshoes and shamrocks.  Stay flexible, but not limp.  Get bent.  Whatever your quote, I like it.  Have a nice day and a better tomorrow.

Nice

It was a very nice evening in this part of the world.  The wind wasn’t howling like a gutshot comanche on a black & white western movie.  It was still dry, but at least the wind wasn’t kicking the dog out of every living being–plant or animal.  But, it looks like the wind machine is going to fire back up next week along with the thermostat turned up.

I’ve been baching (batching–neither seems right)  it for the past day or two.  The rest of my crew is in OKC at a wedding. It is a special event if I show up to a wedding.  Most weddings, funerals, graduations, photo-ops, etc. are just a little better off if I don’t attend.    I have been known to show up to a after-wedding party or two, however.

Anyways, I spent the evening doing chores and cruising Ellis County on the gator with the corgis.  Not at all a bad evening.   It was actually nice.  No matter what I do, it is hard to get away from this drought. We’ve been dealing with it for five years, but it is finally serious.  Real serious.  No wheat, no hay, reduced cow herd, etc.  It doesn’t matter what they are worth, if you don’t have anything to sell.

I know and love this part of the world.  But it is brutal.  I’ve been to other places and there are a couple of places that I really like to go.  I’ve always had a large time in St. Louis and Denver. Ft. Worth ain’t bad.  New Orleans…love the food, couldn’t live there.  Boston–I need/want to go back, but I don’t think that I could live there.  Atlanta–I’ve already bought blue-shaded sunglasses there.  I’m done.  Mexico–nope.  Costa Rica–yeah, that deal could happen.

I saw a map that gave the percentage of residents that said that their state was the best or one of the best to live in.  I would have bet my left nut that Texas was #1.  I was wrong.  They scored high.  But Alaska and Montana were tops.  Utah was next.  Then Texas.  I’m calling BS.  They didn’t poll very many Texans.  RUSM?! that people would rather live in Utah vs. Texas.  There isn’t anybody more proud to be from a state than Texans.  My goodness, how many songs/movies are dedicated to being texan?  I’m pretty sure that this map needed to be printed on absorbent paper that could be used to wipe with.

I understand if Hawaii scores high. Cheers to all.

Good vs. Bad Day?

I’m still not sure.  But I can list you the lowlights real quick.  Here’s the bad.

–WIND!    Jeeminy, holy, pick a lot of 4 letter words.  This crap is unreal.  I’m 43 years old and have lived in NW OK, SW KS and the TX panhandle all of my life (except for 4 GLORIOUS YEARS living in Stillwater, OK) and I have not experienced the absolutely BRUTAL, RELENTLESS, SHITTY wind that we are getting hit with.  Throw in a 5 year drought and F#K%?  It may not be the dirty thirties but it is damn sure a Filthy ’14 thus far.

–JOB  I know, I know.  A job makes everybody’s bad list.  I have a really good job that involves a really good crew of employees.  The drought is taking its effect in terms of business and morale, but I have no complaints with employees.  But, there is a level of retardation that has me checking my teacher certifications to see if I am licensed to teach special ed.  Wheww?!

–K9–She only had one.

–Got word that Tammy’s dad was having a medical deal that needed attention.  Prayers for Grand-Dad that everything is good to go.

–Troy B is just now getting the State Honorary FFA Degree.  RUSM?

The GOOD

—It’s one day closer to a rain and less wind.  It HAS to be!

—Nope, I’m not licensed to teach special ed.  So, therefore, any actions or things out of my mouth that results from my dealing with a lack of intelligience can’t be held against me.  Unless of course, it is a crime or breaks a 10 commandment.  Then, there will be repurcussions.  I like my chances vs. the current legal system instead of facing the dude that wrote on rock tablets.

—K9 only had one kid today.  But, it was a BUCK kid sired by Rainman.  Got 14 pens in the kidding barn.  Got 14 does with babies in the kidding barn.

—Things are stable with Darrell and hopefully the worst word that we hear tomorrow is “stint”.

—Crazy Train.  I like that song.  Good name.

—Troy B recieved the State Honorary FFA Degree tonight.  It’s about damn time.  Troy Baumgardner does more than most ag teachers in terms of helping kids.  If you don’t know him, then you should.  He buys animals for kids.  When I say “buys”, I mean he uses his connections to find the best animal possible and then, if need be, uses some of his own change to buy the “right” one.  He gives feeding & showmanship instructions.  He judges speech contests.  He hauls/provides animals for judging contests.  He helps at local, county, district and state shows.  He does look better wearing a cap.  Yes, Troy has his flaws, but he isn’t afraid to help people and that is what makes the 4-H and FFA programs great.  I have a good story of the night that ESP Special K feed came to life.  But, now,is not the time.

Personally, I can call Troy B an enabler (Well hell, I don’t know why we couldn’t make a feed like that.  Let’s call Bruce.), competitor, famliy friend, somebody I like to stand next to cause I feel tall, accomplice (don’t ask, but yes, there is a story) and most importantly, a friend.

I’ve also got a story of Troy B and I standing outside a really nasty hog pen on a 104 degree Labor Day in KS.  Our buddy Tom Lamle was inside a lean-to with filthy hogs, trying to flip a rock and find a great one.  Lamle yells out, “Hell boys, I spied one.  Oh shit, they’ve got me down!”  A little while later, we had the hogs sorted.  Troy B hosed Lamle and a pair of barrows down before we loaded them into the pickup.  We did let Tom get inside the pickup. We thought the hogs were crosses.  Once the dirt & grime was washed off, Duke had a york barrow for Phoenix.  And he was champion york and grand barrow at Phoenix.

Let me tell you how to judge a guy like Troy B.  And this is just like I want to be judged. (Schneberger, Kenneth Helms, Pfeiffer, Glen Martin, Bill Taylor, etc. this includes you clowns too)  Judge a guy by his daughter(s).   Troy B has a super successful pair of daughters.  And in all fairness, momma might have had something to do with that–on all accounts.  I’m not against judging a guy by his wife, either.  When, a low-rent guy can marry-up, raise really good kids, not get divorced and still have fun chasing animals; hunh, sounds like a heckuva deal.

Looking back 20 some years, I’m not so sure that Tammy wasn’t just trying to flip rocks and find a great one.  She probably should have kept flipping rocks.

Oohh!  OOhh!! The big news from my girl in cali.  They are getting the original Star Wars cast together for the next flick.  Oh Happy Day!  I’m pretty sure that we need to pick a date that needs to be a National Kelln Holiday.  Of course, it will involve Star Wars, good music, Law & Order, good animals, good people, some great stories, fishing, no wind, etc.  Yes, we would all need to wear a kilt, maybe a t-shirt or maybe….and yes, there would be beverages.  Lots of UnSweet tea.  That would be a good day!

Here’s to hoping that all of you had a day that wasn’t perfect, but got better. And like Okie State football, it will always be better tomorrow.  And if it doesn’t, we will wish it would have.

And sometimes, you look down at the keyboard and wish that you wouldn’t have been eating Cheetos while writing this crap.

Watch the Video

Watch the video link.  Fighting Hunger…Feeding Hope.

If it won’t open from here, cut and paste it into your browser and it will go.

This turned out to be a neat deal.  Britt Taylor was actually the first one in Shattuck to say “I’m donating my pigs to the Diamond Hats for the food bank.”  Then it kind of starting snowballing and a pile of Shattuck kids donated their animals to the food bank.  I knew that you could donate pigs and calves.  But I didn’t know that you could donate goats or sheep.  Well, the kids found out that you can.  It is my exeperience that kids will normally do the right thing when given the opportunity.  This is a program that could be adopted at ALL state and national shows.  It also puts the stock show industry in a positive light.

There are a lot of things to take from this video.  First, this is a stellar program.  Second, I’m pretty pleased with how Duke handled himself on camera.  We are all aware that I am a big fan of public speaking.  Maybe, there is a chance we can have some fun in his FFA career.  Third, the wether that Duke is showing in this video is the res. div. 3 wether at 2013 OYE.  I’m still trying to figure out how this goat got beat.  “Brick” was, in my opinion, one of the very best wethers that I have seen.  But I guess that I am wrong since he was reserve grand at the State Fair of OK, 2nd in class at Lone Star Elite, res. div. 2 at Woodward District and res. div. 3 at OYE.  Good career, but not what I thought he was capable of.  I’ve been wrong before, and I am sure that I will be wrong again.

Other shows need to take a look at this program and see what they can do to help their area food bank.

Have a good day.

Foot

It’s been a little bit wild around here for several days.  We were invited to sell a couple of doe kids in the inaugral Diva’s doe sale.  That deal was good.  The sheep crowd was way good.  Throw in a bunch of crazy goat people and that was a good sale.  All of the does sold very well.  I am tickeld where my does ended up.  I hope to sell there again.  Thanks to all that called, looked at, bid or bought our stock.  An early report from the sale tells me that one of the does will be called “Dragon Lady”.   That is fitting.

I had a wonderful meal after the sale in Okarche.  The crew ended up at Eischen’s to eat fried chicken.  I was a solo driver, so I knew that I had to eat and then get out of there before my natural tendencies took over.  Great food, even better company.  There ought to be an Ag Youth photo shoot from that table.

Didn’t get any rain this weekend.  But we got several foot of wind.  I mean BRUTAL–non-stop, straight line kind of tear crap up kind of wind.  The sky was brown with dirt from this wind.  It was the worst that I have personally seen.  I just hope nobody gets in a big hurry to disk up all of this crappy wheat.  We need to wait on a really good rain before we plow this crap up.

The Dragon Lady and Duke took care of does while I was gone.  They managed to hatch two sets.  A set of triplets and a set of twins–ALL doe kids.  That is fine.  I’m actually kind of amped about the triplets.  They are Rainman on a Freak On A Leash x Joe Dirt X Harley.  One of these is going to get bred to Rumour Has It.

I did have a borderline trainwreck.  Had an older mature doe kid on the 22nd.  She had a single doe kid.  She cleaned and seemed fine.  This afternoon, Tammy called me from the kidding barn and said that this doe had a head hanging out.  My mind flashed as I envisioned really bad smells.  I told her to walk away and I would take care of it.  I waited till nobody was around, then went to deal with this mess.  It was a good thing that James Sweet showed up.  He held the doe down while I pulled the kid with chains.  It was a hard pull at first, but then here it came.  Yeah, it was dead, but It wasn’t nasty.  Just hadn’t seen very many like this.  Ever.

Last week, I found an abandoned rabbit nest.  There were 2 dead cottontails and 3 live ones.  I might have hollered at Duke.  As a result of alerting the nature boy, now, we have three orphan rabbits.  Their eyes weren’t open yet.  Tammy and Duke researched the raising of “bottle baby” rabbits.  On Thursday evening, I was told that I couldn’t speak around them–too loud.  I felt like Elmer Fudd.  “We’ve got be vewy, vewy quiet in order to sneak up on the wabbit.”  I didn’t think that they would keep them alive, but now we have three healthy bottle baby rabbits that like to eat apples.  I can tell you that wild rabbits are easier to raise on a bottle  than a high dollar goat.   Duke and I named them tonight.  Foot, Foot-Foot and Foot-Foot-Foot.  If you haven’t heard of that rabbit story, then you need to.  Google it–Mel Tillis telling the story of why he stuttered.  The story of 3 rabbits.

Speaking of carrots, Saturday morning I was bent down on one knee, looking to see if any carrots were sprouting in the garden.  They were.  As I was pulling some little weeds and bent down with one knee in the dirt, I noticed something to the right of me.  Only a foot away from me, I quit pulling weeds, cocked my head so that I could let my good eye (my left one) focus on what was just to the right of me, only a foot away.  Like a terminator’s eye recognition, once it registered that it was a SNAKE, I landed a couple of FOOT away–to the left.  Holy foot-long skid mark!  It was a five foot + bull snake.  I let it be since it was not in a barn, but dang it, I’m pretty sure my heart rate spiked at least a foot.  That and I needed a foot of toilet paper to clean up the after-effects.

They canonized a pair of SAINTS in Vatican City this evening.  I think that this is cool.  Take some time to read up on it, regardless of your religion or lack thereof.  I personally know a person or two that should be considered saints.  I’m dang sure not going to make it that level.  I’m just kind of hoping for the “good guy that did more good than harm while having fun” ranking.  Maybe, that is just wishful thinking.

Have a good day and a better tomorrow.

Friday Changes

Still waiting on 4 does to kid that are due within the past 3 days.  No changes on this Friday.   It was a Friday at the store.  But now, it is the weekend.  Duke has cleaned a part of a barn out for me.  His screw ups make for cheap (free) labor. Tammy didn’t have anything for supper tonight, so she and I cruised over to Charlie’s.  Hadn’t been there in a month, but luckily they still remembered us.  Had one heckuva good ribeye.  They had a live band tonight, but we didn’t stick around.   It’s a good behavior Friday for Kelln. Some would say that is a change.

Friday evenings are a good time for discussion of changes.  Some just get smoked and talk a bunch of BS.  But then, come monday, they don’t follow through.  Some just have wishful thinking.  And others, act on their thoughts.  Over the years, I’ve been guilty of all three.  Kind of like the Scorpions, the wind of change is here. Speaking of wind, I wish that I hadn’t mentioned that Thursday night was calm, because it has blown hard ever since then.

Got Duke’s premium sale pic from OYE in the mail today.  Fat Fred and Kyle of Farm Credit of Enid were the buyers.  Fat Fred is skinny.  Hell, I may outweigh Fat Fred at this point in time.  Something is going to have to change.  Maybe, I’ll start making changes on Saturday.  Maybe not.

Just got word that Braden Schovanec placed 3rd at the State FFA Public Speaking contest.  Congrats to Braden.   A top 3 at State is a huge accomplishment.  Especially considering that he should have changed to a better speech writer.  No matter what career path a person chooses, quality public speaking is ALWAYS a positive skill to have.  And that my friends, will not change.  On a Friday or any other day.

Thursday

I hope everybody’s evening was as lovely as it was here south of Fargo.  NO WIND.  Can’t believe it.  The wind blew like it had something to prove yesterday, last night and most of today.  But this evening, dang nice.  We just needed some moisture.

It is becoming very obvious that I am going to have a pile of Rainman daughters for sale this year.  We are nearing the end of this round of does kidding and we have a high % of doe kids.  These mommas are really good and have doe kids.  I kept a butt-load of Rainman daughters last year.  Can’t/won’t do it 2 years in a row.  4 does to go and we need them to have buck kids to get the percentages closer to level.

Here’s to all a good evening.  And a better tomorrow.
