I have yet to take a vacation this year.\u00a0 Sure, a day of catching big fish.\u00a0 But no vacation.\u00a0 So, when Tom Kester called and said, &#8220;Whatcha got going the last weekend of July?&#8221;&#8230;..I was intrigued.\u00a0 \u00a0 Ron Simonson had contacted Tom about AIing a set of does.\u00a0 Tom agreed and then called my dumbass.\u00a0 Sounds fun.\u00a0 Let&#8217;s go!<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0This past Friday, I met Keester at Schovanec&#8217;s place.\u00a0 Yeah, the place where they stack those reserve grand OYE poppers like cord wood.\u00a0 Right next to a grand OYE trailer.\u00a0 And the barns are lined with banners.\u00a0 I forgot to tell TravASS that we were meeting at his place.\u00a0 Oh well.\u00a0 TravASS was there, getting ready to go make hay.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Before we left, I looked at a map.\u00a0 Yes, I actually still have an atlas.\u00a0 And I prefer having a map in hand versus the electronic crap.\u00a0 Once I have the visual, I&#8217;m good.\u00a0 Unless, I&#8217;m telling a story while driving through Wichita and then we get to take a detour.\u00a0 It&#8217;s all good.\u00a0 Anyways, the map revealed that it wasn&#8217;t very far from Uncle Ron&#8217;s to Columbus, Nebraska.\u00a0 So, I texted Judd Went and asked if we could come take a look around.\u00a0 He allowed that we needed to come on.\u00a0 Somebody would be there.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Good stop!\u00a0 Now, I am the proud owner of a 100 head of bad-ass yearling does and three yearling buck prospects ready to mark some asses.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>HAAAAAA!!!!!\u00a0 You clowns have been waiting for something like that.\u00a0 But this is not that day.\u00a0 Seriously.\u00a0 It was a really good stop.\u00a0 Judd had to go to a wedding, so his father-in-law gave us the tour.\u00a0 Kent was great.\u00a0 Good livestock people are the best.\u00a0 We talked goats, sheep, cattle, a few hogs, weather, barns, etc&#8230;&#8230;it was fun.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Did I buy anything?\u00a0 \u00a0Yes.\u00a0 I still buy goats for students.\u00a0 Just in case, I did throw the popper into the back of the pickup.\u00a0 On the way up, Judd called and asked if I could haul a few goats back to Oklahoma.\u00a0 Sure.\u00a0 All of us in this industry need to be neighborly and help.\u00a0 I now know that a few is FIVE.\u00a0 And I bought 10 wethers and doe kids.\u00a0 FIFTEEN makes for a really crowded popper.\u00a0 But good stock is hard to pass up when the price fits the need.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0We took the full tour.\u00a0 The mature buck line up is WAY impressive.\u00a0 The ones they own as well as the ones they have there on lease.\u00a0 I saw one of the best mature bucks that I have ever seen and I saw one of the scariest.\u00a0 Glad I got to see him and real glad that I don&#8217;t have to kid does bred to him.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0We got loaded and headed to Uncle Ron&#8217;s.\u00a0 He told us to hurry.\u00a0 &#8220;The ribs are ready.&#8221;\u00a0 \u00a0We pulled into his place, off loaded for the night and headed inside to eat some ribs.\u00a0 And I now realize that Nebraskans have a tendency to under-sell their comments.\u00a0 Judd said a few and it was five.\u00a0 Ron said ribs and Oh snap!!!\u00a0 \u00a0When Uncle Ron says &#8220;ribs&#8221;, he means the Flintstone&#8217;s brontosaurus type, flip your car on it&#8217;s side kind of ribs.\u00a0 Holy Schnikes!!\u00a0 \u00a0These beef ribs were HUGE!!!\u00a0 \u00a0Caveman huge!!\u00a0 \u00a0 And here&#8217;s the kicker.\u00a0 I normally could care less about beef ribs but these were oh so good.\u00a0 No need for knives or forks.\u00a0 The only tools needed were two hands to grab a rib and go at it and then a towel to wipe up the juices.\u00a0 No tearing &amp; tugging, just eating.\u00a0 I will say that this was either the 1st or 2nd best beef ribs that I have ever eaten.\u00a0 There is a sentimental reason that I just don&#8217;t say the best.\u00a0 My Grandma Schneider used to make beef ribs cooked on a bed of sauerkraut.\u00a0 I haven&#8217;t had them cooked like that anywhere else.\u00a0 I remember them fondly.\u00a0 I actually think that they were short ribs.\u00a0 These ribs on Friday evening were NOT short.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 This next part may surprise those of you that know Ron &amp; I.\u00a0 We did have a Moscow Mule or two.\u00a0 However, not more than three.\u00a0 At least, I did not have more than three.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0It rained Saturday morning.\u00a0 But, it let up in time for the AI to begin.\u00a0 As expected, Ron had a great group of helpers.\u00a0 On the way up to Nebraska, Keester asked,\u00a0 &#8220;Any idea what bucks we will be using?&#8221;\u00a0 \u00a0My reply, &#8220;Nope.\u00a0 But knowing Ron, it will all be name-brand stuff.&#8221;\u00a0 I was right.\u00a0 Real right!!\u00a0 Even some bucks that have yet to be advertised from big time deals.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 And we did look at a bad-ass prospect at Ron&#8217;s out of FBGM.\u00a0 He calls him Fabian.\u00a0 And I asked, &#8220;What The F does Fabian mean?&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 I&#8217;ll be honest.\u00a0 I take pride in my knowledge of music.\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t know crap about Fabian.\u00a0 Now, as a result of looking at a goat and asking the question, &#8220;Whatcha calling this one?&#8221;\u00a0 I have learned more.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Here&#8217;s what I know now, most of which I already knew.\u00a0 Although we were really well behaved, it is a good thing that Tom Kester and I live on opposite sides of the state.\u00a0 I will never look at an onion the same way.\u00a0 Likewise, it is a good thing Ron Simonson and I live two states away from each other.\u00a0 Otherwise, we would have a couple hundred head of does and NEITHER of us want to have does at our place.\u00a0 Ron is WAY smarter than I am.\u00a0 He has figgered out how to help people with their programs without having many does at his place.\u00a0 Great hospitality in the Cornhusker state.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0No, I did not buy the grand at OYE in 2022.\u00a0 But, I enjoyed getting the chance to sort some stock and buy some deals that a worn-out old has been like myself feels like a kid can have a chance if they feed, care for and show properly.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Vacation&#8212;no.\u00a0 \u00a0Working vacation that was fun&#8212;HELL YEAH!!!\u00a0 Nebraska ain&#8217;t Maui but it was good.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0And while I was gone, my brother-in-law stopped in to check on Tammy.\u00a0 He texted me &#8220;The good thing about being married to my sister is you don&#8217;t have to come up with an excuse to drink.\u00a0 She&#8217;s excuse enough.\u00a0 Condolences on the bathroom project.&#8221;\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0My status with the ever-lasting bathroom remodel remains unchanged.\u00a0 Do what is asked, stay out of the way and pay the bills.\u00a0 I do my part.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 People, have a good one.\u00a0 I am.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Tammy &amp;
