{"id":1858,"date":"2017-10-24T11:40:14","date_gmt":"2017-10-24T11:40:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kellnlivestock.com\/?p=1858"},"modified":"2017-10-24T11:40:27","modified_gmt":"2017-10-24T11:40:27","slug":"fat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/kellnlivestock.com\/site\/fat\/","title":{"rendered":"Fat"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This is not a point aimed at any one show, animal or person. \u00a0This is just a general observation that has came from several years.<\/p>\n<p>There has been a growing trend in the show ring. \u00a0Goats are getting fatter. \u00a0We are feeding them to be fatter and then spending several days before show day hardening them up. \u00a0Either way, winning goats are fatter than they have ever been. \u00a0This is just a trend that happens in the stock show world. \u00a0It won&#8217;t be long and we will start to swing back the other way.<\/p>\n<p>However, a fat goat actually fits right in with all of the other species. \u00a0Sheep have been borderline obese for the past couple of years. \u00a0It isn&#8217;t uncommon to see 180 pound wether lambs that are pulled back to 158 #s. \u00a0How, fat pulls.<\/p>\n<p>The key word in the cattle business for several years has been &#8220;chubby&#8221;. \u00a0We&#8217;ve put more and more body and guts into these animals.<\/p>\n<p>And hogs, where to begin. \u00a0 Low protein, high fat diets. \u00a0I\u00a0couldn&#8217;t even begin to list all of the fat supplements for pigs. \u00a0Fittingly, there is a supplement called Sumo. \u00a0Pigs are so massive wide, with extra muscle and fat draped on to their skeleton that they can barely handle it all.<\/p>\n<p>We have built all of these animals to be wide based, wide chested, round ribbed and big assed. \u00a0All of these &#8220;desirable&#8221; traits add up to people feeding them to be fatter to appear wider, etc. \u00a0Some of these animals can carry it and look good. \u00a0Some not so much.<\/p>\n<p>Appropriately enough, the people feeding these animals are fat as well. \u00a0Not everyone. \u00a0But Americans as a whole. \u00a0We are the fattest country in the world. \u00a0So, it is only fitting that we would make our animals fat. \u00a0I can tell you that I am the fattest that I have ever been. \u00a0I&#8217;ve never weighed 200#s but I have gotten closer. \u00a0I weigh on the dog scales by the front door of the vet clinic. \u00a0 199.4 is the heaviest that I have ever been. \u00a0For about 20 years, I ranged from 188 to 192. \u00a0Maybe it is almost 50 years of age catching up to me. Maybe it is a bad diet, lack of proper exercise and a bad habit or two.<\/p>\n<p>And\u2026.cats and dogs in the USofA have a higher rate of obesity that ever before. \u00a0It is all relevant.<\/p>\n<p>Have a good day and a better tomorrow.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is not a point aimed at any one show, animal or person. \u00a0This is just a general observation that has came from several years.
