Make sure your goats are getting plenty to drink. This kind of wether is when champions are made. The lazy asses are sitting inside not making sure they’re goats are warm and that they have fresh UN-frozen water to drink. Water is more important than feed in this kind of wether. If they are thirsty, they won’t eat as much. If they don’t have water, they can’t metabolize the feed that they do eat. Make sure your projects get a good drink of fresh water at least twice a day.
Don’t run your wethers on ice. Leave a blanket on if you do run them today.
There was a very good goat show in Norman on Saturday. Thanks to the breeders that put this show on. It was very well ran and very exhibitor friendly. The quality was very deep thoughout the wether show. There were a lot of OYE premium sale wethers at this show. Classes were very good. I thought Marty Gibbs did a very consistent job of lining goats up. Whether I agree with every placing doesn’t matter, I could follow him and he lined wethers up consistent with how he has done it at past shows. That is what a judge should do. The doe show was very tough. Not as many numbers, but a ton of quality.
Anybody that has a goat from these breeders is crazy for not taking them to this show. One it pays good. Two, the competition was very good. Three, it is December and there is a lot of time between now and your local/county shows. Shouldn’t be any excuses.
Mikey introduced us to a new Mexican restaurant in Norman. Very good eating. Duke didn’t want any part of the cerviche. He tried it in Costa Rica and he is done with it. Thompson and I will normally point the way to a dang good eating establishment and he didn’t let us down this time. Our crew has a tradition that winner buys. Well Duke and I haven’t had to buy much this fall. Taylor bought Friday night at Saltgrass and Schoovy bought Mexican.
We listened to the first quarter of the game on the radio coming home. Got goats unloaded and chores done, then made it in to watch the rest of the game. Big win. Kela sent us some video of the final seconds before they jumped the wall, stormed the field and brought the goal posts down. I’m a little jealous. There wasn’t any big wins in Stillwater during my tenure there.
We’re going to the Champions Choice jackpot tomorrow, no matter what the weather does. I doubt it will be as bad as what the weather guys make it sound like.
For these kind of shows, I don’t pull wethers very hard. They will stay on water till this afternoon. We will give each goat a drench of Crusade tonight. Feed tonight will depend on what their fill looks like. Tomorrow morning all depends on how the goats look and handle. Will probably give another round of Crusade early in the morning and then go by feel from their. Every animal is different.
Duke made it to eleven years old today. It was eleven years ago yesterday night, that Kela had locked herself in the bathroom, bawling, saying “I don’t want a little brother!!” I think she will keep him now.
Duke got a custom made hatchet this past weekend from my parents. There is a dude in Shattuck that makes some of the best handmade knives and hatchets in the world. Several trees on the Kelln piece of paradise have already met their demise due to this kid/hatchet combo.
Wind is blowing, again. Time to head to work, again.
to all. I found myself at the house later in the morning than I usually am. I have to deliver parts and look at some trade ins and I need some daylight for that. Looks like it is going to be a little bit cold this weekend. That shouldn’t stop anybody from attending the champion’s choice jackpot. Plenty of heaters in that barn. And if you blanket goats properly when you get home, it won’t hurt the wethers any. Be careful of using heat lamps. Goats are curious and will break the bulbs, eat the cords, etc. if you don’t have the lights caged properly. We don’t use heat lamps on our wethers. Shed, enclosed huts in each pen and you guessed it, blankets.
Three songs that everybody gets in a better mood when they hear them.
–Amazing Grace
–Star Spangled Banner
–Happy Birthday.
Isn’t it amazing at the crap that we get on the internet to look at daily. We get on message boards to see who was made mad, we check breeders world to see what kind of sewage some of those are stirring up. Some might even find some worthless stuff on here. But, we have to look. It is a habit and it just takes a minute. Just think of the people that are clicking on Kelly’s website, two or three times a day, waiting to see pics of the does in their upcoming sale and they won’t spend a dime at the sale. But they are addicted to checking out all things goats.
Makes it fun.
Anybody that has a doe or wether from a participating breeder MUST be planning on attending the Champions Choice jackpot next Saturday in Norman, OK. It will be a top notch jackpot with a quality judge and quality goats from quality breeders. Yes, I know it is bedlam gameday, but that will be later that night. The show will be over. Besides, OSU looks better on the radio than they do in real life.
Had an in depth discussion on Thanksgiving Day about the funniest movie of all time. Caveman, with Ringo Starr and Dennis Quaid, was brought up as one that very few remember, but is a funny, yet immature movie. But once Blazing Saddles was brought up, the discussion got serious. If you haven’t watched it in a long time, you need to. It is amazing at the way Mel Brooks made fun of politics, race, religion, sex, etc., etc, etc. And this movie is about thirty years old. You couldn’t make this movie today. The PC police would have stopped it before it was released to regular theaters.. I would only be able to watch it on the IFC channel. Kind of like Pulp Fiction.
Been quoting a lot of old Saturday Night Live lines lately. Once a decade, that show gets the right cast, and it is way good. Funniest thing I ever watched on TV was Chris Farley as a chippendale’s dancer in a dance off against Patrick Swayze. CLASSIC!! Will Ferrell playing cowbell was another great one. I remember the night that Buckwheat was assassinated. (Sp?) Eddie Murphy as Buckwheat singing the hits–“Wookin pa nub in all da wong paces”. Look up and see who the original singer was of that song. He also had a great duet hit called “The YellowRose of Texas”.
Speaking of great songs. Here’s a top ten 9maybe) list for you to look up on itunes.
T’Pau–Heart & Soul
Dropkick Murphy’s–Amazing Grace
Marty Robbins–Ghost Riders in the Sky
Cinderella–Gypsy Road
Jerry Jeff Walker–several
Tesla–Hang Tough
Metallica–Whiskey in the Jar
Waylon Jennings–Lonesome, Onery & Mean
Foreigner–JukeBoxHero
Elvis Presley–Kentucky Rain
Johnny Rivers–Baby, I need your loving
Motley Crue–Live Wire
Don Williams–Lord, I hope this day is good
Red Rider–Lunatic Fringe

Glen Campbell–Rhinestone Cowboy
Elvis Costello–Veronica
Vince Gill–Cinderella
Eric Johnson–Cliffs of Dover
The Doors–Peace Frog
Iron Maiden–Run for the Hills
Restless Heart–Why does it have to be Wrong or Right? They’ve got several dang good songs.
Sammy Kershaw–Queen of my Double Wide
Eddie Money–Walk on Water
Billy Joel–We didn’t Start the Fire
Garth–Much too young to feel this damn old
George–Blame it on Mexico–maybe his 2nd best song.
Frank–The Way You Look Tonight–if you need to look up the last name of the previous threeartists, then you don’t know music, or you are way too young.
Since it is Christmas time, if you like concerts, then you need to go see the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. We’ve been several times, with the kids. It is one heckuva show.
Speaking of concerts, I love them. I can’t play a tune, but I have witnessed a lot of good musical productions. From AC/DC, KISS & Van Halen to the Nutcracker ballet to Bob Childers in Okeene, OK to Cody Canada in Stillwater to campfire concerts in Luckenbach, TX. Seen and heard some great music in churches.
When I walk in the barn, there is an Ipod that gets fired up with a WIDE variety of music. Classical, pop, country, rap, old rock and hard rock, etc. GOOD music playing loud. If it’s too loud, then you’re too old. Once the music starts, my mood gets better and it is time to go to work.
As I am writing this, Duke is in his room practicing his trumpet playing. He can’t play a note either. He has a C in band. His mom’s fault, not his.
We have a lot to be thankful for in this country. We need to be thankful for GOD. We need to give thanks to the veterans and current military personnel that preserve our rights in this country. Because of the freedom in this country, we have the rights and opportunities to do things such as show goats and other livestock. I am thankful for the much needed rains that we have seen recently. I am thankful for the right to express my opinion. I am thankful for my family.
I hope Duke shoots a deer before I get to Shattuck so that I don’t have to mess with it. I am thankful that I will be able to eat raisin cream pie and that I will not have to touch any yams. I am extremely thankful that I don’t have to go with Tammy and Kela on their shopping adventures on Friday.
Have a good Thanksgiving.
Duke made it through his first speech contest. He said it fine, but he can’t get loud enough to win yet. His voice will change. Really good competition. I’m pleased with his presentation. We’ve got a lot to work on in the future, but he isn’t afraid to get in front of a crowd and talk. The rest will come.
I did get to see Uncle Fester at the speech contest. For those of you to young to remember the Addams Family tv show–google it. He had recently been bit by a boar. Yes, a boar bit Mr. Gosney. Nasty wound. However, his daughter qualified for the state contest. First time in several decades that a Shattuck student made it to state.
